The Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan has announced their Public Meeting Schedule. Please join us for a meeting in your community to speak up for Safe Routes to School!

What is the Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan?

The Hawaii Department of Transportation will be developing a Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan to assess the needs of Hawaii’s transportation system in terms of the pedestrian environment. The plan will provide guidance to staff by providing an implementation plan for infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects and programs, performance measures to assess progress, and pedestrian policy and design guidelines. The plan will support a multimodal transportation system and improve the safety, connectivity, mobility and accessibility of our State highway* system.

* The Hawaii Safe Routes Hui urges HDOT to work with Counties to identify local roads in the plan as many pedestrian routes are local roads.

“Make it Safe for Me” Bike Month Poster Contest Winners Announced

The Hawai’i Safe Routes to School Hui in partnership with Hawai`i Pedal Power is proud to announce the twelve winners in its Bike Poster Contest, held during May, 2010 in celebration of Bike Month Hawai`i 2010 sponsored by Jamba Juice Hawai`i.

Students from Kindergarten to twelfth grade were encouraged to design a colorful poster that communicates the need for safe, connected bicycle and pedestrian pathways in Hawai`i. Over 158 posters were submitted and over 600 votes were tabulated to arrive at the winning entries.

“There were so many beautiful entries,” said Ann Peterson, event coordinator. “It is very evident that these children want safe places to ride their bicycle, and that they understand the rules of the road. I hope we are able to realize their vision and create more bicycle facilities.”

Jaclyn Watase of Mililani High School was the Grand Prize winner with her vibrant poster reminiscent of the Peter Maxx posters of the Sixties. Honorable Mention went to to Kylah Reed of Kapolei Middle School. Grade level winners were: K-1: Nicole Ou of Waikiki Elementary School (1st) and Makenna Isaacson of Aikahi Elementary School (2nd); 2-3: Breydyn Kubo (1st) and Addie Fisette (2nd), both of Puohala Elementary School; 4-6: Ricky Ma (1st) and Remi Jose (2nd), both of Manoa Elementary School. The High School Division winners included: Alyssa Perales (4th) and Christopher Coiescott (3rd) of Mililani High School and Nick Callo (2nd) and Arwil Pineda (1st) of Farrington High School.

Jaclyn Watase, the grand prize winner will receive a SARIS Bike Parking Rack for Mililani High School, and year’s supply of Jamba Juice smoothies to enjoy. Other prizes include gift packs with certificates for a week of Jamba Juice smoothies, a Jamba tumbler or mug, a stylish Jamba t-shirt, a Bike Month bike bag made of recyclable materials and a bright red blinking safety light for walking or bicycling at dawn or dusk.

“The partnership between Jamba Juice and Hawaii Pedal Power was a natural fit,” explained Sherri Rigg, director of marketing for Jamba Hawaii. “Jamba is committed to getting kids active and by working with Hawaii Pedal Power to increase awareness of bike safety for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians, we’re encouraged that more kids and families will start cycling to school and work.”

The winning entries are now posted at www.hawaiipedalpower.com/poster/ and will be featured in a 2011 calendar to help promote Safe Routes to School statewide.
